Ninety years ago "Ding" Darling dedicated the first anthology of his cartoons to the "Ordinary Citizen." The long-suffering Ordinary Citizen appeared in many roles in his subsequent cartoons, sometimes as a consumer, sometimes as a voter, and sometimes as an aggrieved spouse. Most frequently, however, "Ding's" long-suffering Ordinary Citizen was the taxpayer.

As can be seen in the following pages, Darling did not always sympathize with the ordinary citizen; sometimes he was soundly critical.
